Samsung Galaxy S6 Specs, Price, Release Date, Rumors

Updated on

It’s been just a few months since Samsung launched its Galaxy S5. But rumors are already pouring in about the next-gen Galaxy S6. Sales of the Korean company are falling, and it’s losing market share to Asian Android vendors such as Xiaomi and Micromax. So, the Galaxy S6 has to establish a new benchmark in the smartphone industry to differentiate itself from the crowd and attract consumers.

Galaxy S6 likely to be announced at MWC 2015

The world’s largest smartphone maker has historically launched its new high-end Galaxy smartphones around the Mobile World Congress. The next year’s MWC is scheduled to begin on March 2, 2015. Expect Samsung to unveil the Galaxy S6 at an Unpacked event around the same time. Whispers circulating the rumor mill point to a metal casing for the next flagship device.

Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Alpha with metal body. Yoon Han-kil, SVP of product strategy at Samsung, said in April that the company’s future high-end devices would feature ” a new form factor.” The launch of Galaxy Alpha fueled speculations that the Galaxy S6 will feature a metallic frame to give it a premium feel.

Galaxy S6 with 4K display?

What’s more, Samsung usually increases the screen size with new smartphones. The Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch display. According to PC Advisor, the Galaxy S6  is likely to sport 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display. Rumor mill claims that the new smartphone will have 1440 x 2650 resolution with 442ppi. There have also been rumors that Samsung will introduce 4K display with its flagship smartphone due next year. The Korean company is already working on the 4K technology. That will help Samsung differentiate its device from rivals. But 4K display appears a bridge too far.

Samsung has made significant progress with curved display technology. Galaxy Round was its first smartphone with flexible display. The company may use curved display in Galaxy S6. However, experts argue that the flexible display may not be ready for mass production in the next few months, Galaxy Round was a niche product launched only in specific markets.

Galaxy S6 to offer top-notch performance

Fans expect the Galaxy S6 to sport a 20MP front camera as Sony Corporation (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758)’s Xperia Z1 comes with 20.7MP main shooter. The handset will also have an Adreno 430 graphics processor to support high-resolution videos and images. The latest Adreno 430 delivers 30% faster performance. Moreover, the device is rumored to come with 3,300mAh battery.

Latest rumors indicate that the Galaxy S6 will be powered by Qualcomm’s newest processors, either Snapdragon 808 or 810. The six-core, 64-bit Snapdragon 808 supports 2K display, and it’s considered the best smartphone processor on the market. Meanwhile, Qualcomm has just upgraded the Snapdragon 810 to an octa-core 64-bit processor capable of powering 4K displays. The Galaxy S6 is expected to come with the newest Android L operating system.
