Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Grecian headquarters were attacked early Wednesday morning in Athens, Greece. Apparently, the assailants drove a van through the front doors of the building and set off a device that burnt the entrance of the building.
So far, nobody has come forward to claim responsibility for this attack. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Greece has seen their fair share of attacks from terrorist and anarchist groups. These groups like to attack government buildings, offices, and financial institutions. And like the one mentioned above, most attacks usually happen during late night hours.
The two security guards who witnessed the incident gave their testimonies to the police. They claimed there were three people inside the van and forced them to evacuate the building before they rammed the back of the vehicle into the building. The assailants triggered an incendiary device from inside the van which apparently contained gas canisters and a few containers filed with gasoline.
The forensics team got to take a look at van which was left out in front of the building.
Although it’s reported that random attacks have died down quite a bit in the last year, there has been a small increase of attacks after a police officer shot a teenager back in 2008.
Right now we don’t know the motives or many more of the details behind firebomb attack. It’s still to early for the police officials to figure out the person or group who carried out the attack but as I mentioned before, they’re leaning towards terrorist and anarchist groups. It’s a relief that nobody was hurt. Judging by the testimonies provided by the guards, it sounded like the assailants were more interested in vandalism than harming anyone. I’m hoping that the police will get to the bottom of the case and solve it before another attack happens.
