The below data points are global in nature unless otherwise specified.

  • More than 400 U.S. companies were publicly subjected to activist demands so far this year, exceeding last year’s levels. Outside of the U.S., Asia and Canada have seen significant increases in the number of companies publicly subjected to activist demands compared to the same period in 2017.
  • Services and financial companies took most of the focus in August, with more than half of the companies publicly subjected to activist demands belonging to those sectors.
  • Nearly half of the demands made in August were associated with board-related activism. Other governance issues followed with almost 18% of the activist demands advanced last month falling within that category.
