A New Version Of Oppo Find X Could Be The World’s First Phone With 10GB RAM

Updated on

Just last year, Asus unveiled ZenFone AR with a staggering 8GB RAM. Soon, 8GB RAM became pretty common on premium Android devices. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 comes with 8GB RAM, so does OnePlus 6 and a myriad of other handsets. It looks like 10GB RAM will soon become a new standard. And the crown for the world’s first phone with 10GB RAM could go to a new version of Oppo Find X.

Oppo phone with 10GB RAM spotted on TENAA

Oppo released its innovative and expensive Find X in June. Priced at 999 euros in European markets, it features 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Oppo had also launched a Lamborghini Edition of the device with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. Now the company seems to be preparing a new version of Oppo Find X with 10GB RAM.

Oppo’s new device was recently spotted on Chinese certification site TENAA. It was spotted by reliable Twitter tipster Ice Universe. The new version of Find X has 256GB internal storage rather than 512GB, though. According to the listing, all other features and specifications will be the same as the existing Oppo Find X.

The TENAA listing shows the device with a gray color scheme. The existing model comes in blue and red colors. It’s unclear when Oppo would release this device, but its launch appears to be close considering its appearance on the certification site.

The rumor mill claims Oppo’s sibling Vivo is also in the race to launch a phone with 10GB RAM. Whichever company ends up being the first, we are just a few weeks or months away from such a device. If it happens, the device will have more RAM than most laptops. Both Oppo and Vivo are owned by China’s BBK Electronics.

Does Oppo Find X really need 10GB RAM?

Apple’s iPhone XS and XS Max – by far the most powerful smartphones on the planet – come with just 4GB RAM. The OnePlus 6 and Galaxy Note 9 both are available in 6GB and 8GB RAM options. Most other smartphone vendors are still using a maximum of 6GB RAM on their devices. So, does the next-gen Oppo Find X really need to go up to 10GB RAM? Why does Oppo feel the need to bump up the RAM further?

It could be because the existing Oppo Find X suffers from poor software and hardware integration. Multiple reviewers have pointed out that it has poor RAM management. Oppo might be hoping that packing more RAM could help solve the problem.

Another reason could be the marketing gimmick. We all know that 8GB RAM is more than enough to handle any task you throw at a smartphone. But there is some prestige in being the world’s first vendor to launch a 10GB RAM phone. It will help the new Oppo Find X stand out in the crowd, and the company could run a massive advertising campaign on the back of the higher RAM.

In all other aspects, the new Oppo Find X would be similar to the existing one. The current Find X features a 6.42-inch bezel-less Super AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080p resolution. It has an innovative sliding camera mechanism. The 25-megapixel front camera will slide out when you need it and then disappear. The rear camera setup consists of a 20MP lens with an f/2.0 aperture and a 16MP lens with an f/2.0 aperture. It is sold primarily in Asian and European markets. It’s unclear whether the next-gen Oppo Find X will find its way into the United States.

The Find X has been praised for its sleek design. Its facial recognition technology is not as secure as Apple’s Face ID but it’s convenient. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset, the most powerful processor currently available to Android vendors.
