iPhone 7 Plus Camera Problem: Emergency Cooldown, Black Screen

Updated on

With Christmas all over and many people counting what’s left of their finances, imagine being hit with the news that your new iPhone 7 Plus camera is faulty! Some users have been reporting a problem which may only be fixable by replacing the handset entirely.

iPhone 7 Plus camera woes

As you probably know, the iPhone 7 Plus camera is one of the most-hyped snappers of any device in years, and for the most part, it has deserved such praise. But just like Samsung’s, Apple devices are also accustomed to the odd fault or two, and this particular one has been giving people headaches.

On Reddit a few days ago, a user who goes by the name of teryakiwok posted in a thread titled iPhone 7 Plus Cameras are Dying”:

“My new iPhone 7 Plus camera went AWOL today, and a quick Twitter / Google search confirmed I’m not the only one. I opened up the camera app only to find a black image preview. Sometimes I can get a picture; however, it’s either tinted green or purple and has come with a screen stating ‘Emergency iPhone needs to cool down’ when the handset wasn’t even slightly warm. I’ve tried hard reset and factory restore to no avail.”

Acknowledgment but no statement

If you look at the Reddit thread and do some searching about the issue on Twitter, you will find that this problem was first mentioned in October. Since teryakiwok’s post, there have been many comments from other users experiencing the problem.

Apparently, some iPhone 7 Plus camera problems are being fixed at Apple Genius Bars. However, other people have preferred to take their handsets back to Apple for a replacement, which means it is acknowledging the fault but not commenting about it. This is becoming the norm considering the wide array of problems seen.

Spotting the problem

If you’re concerned about your iPhone 7 Plus camera developing the problem, here’s what you need to look out for. Social media has been rife with reports of users seeing no image preview when using the camera app. Instead, they are greeted by a black featureless screen. Others like teryakiwok have also reported seeing flashes of green or purple and a Cooldown warning.

If you see any of the above, or something similar, take your iPhone 7 Plus camera problems to a Genius Bar. Don’t sit on it hoping for an update to put it right because this issue was seen before the recent iOS 10.2 update, meaning that it’s more than likely a hardware fault.

If you’re reading this and you have not experienced any camera problems with your device, have you been lucky? We don’t have an answer, as no one knows how widespread this is at the moment. It’s possible that these iPhone 7 Plus camera problems are all related to one particular batch of devices, and as such, it may remain an isolated incident, which is why Apple has yet to release a statement about it.
