Apple Releases iOS 10.1: Here’s What’s New In The Latest Version

Updated on

After about a month of beta testing, Apple has officially released the iOS 10.1 to the public. It is the first major update to Apple’s latest mobile operating system that went public on September 13. All iOS 10 users can update to the new version over-the-air by going to Settings > GeneralCheck for updates. Just click Install and accept the conditions to get the iOS 10.1.

The update brings several improvements and bug fixes. Here’s all that’s new the iOS 10.1:

iOS 10.1 brings Portrait mode for iPhone 7 Plus

The update brings a new Portrait mode that takes advantage of the dual-camera setup in the iPhone 7 Plus. The Portrait mode uses the telephoto lens and wide-angle lens to create shallow depth of field portrait images with blurred backgrounds. An image signal processor in the iPhone 7 Plus dissects different layers of the photo before deciding what to blur with a “bokeh” effect.

The Portrait mode works on people, objects, and pets. But it requires good lighting to achieve the blurred look. Users can’t customize the effect, so it’s more like a hit-or-miss at this point, says TechCrunch. However, the Portrait mode works well in most cases. If you don’t like a photo, you can disable the Portrait mode after capturing it and go back to the original image without the “bokeh” effect. Apple is still working to improve the feature, and it’s only going to get better over time.

Messages app

You can now play Bubble and Screen effects with Reduce Motion enabled in the Messages app. Apple has also added the option to replay the effects, just in case you want to live the magic again. Apple said it has fixed an issue where videos captured and sent via the Messages app could be missing audio. Another issue that previously caused contact names to appear incorrectly in Messages has also been fixed.

iOS 10.1 brings Transit directions to Japan

The Maps app in iOS 10.1 offers Transit support for every major subway, ferry, train, and bus line for Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. It also has layouts of underground structures and walkways that connect major transit stations.

Other bug fixes

The most notable bug fixes include Bluetooth connectivity with third-party accessories, people’s names in the Photos app being saved in iCloud backups, and an issue that caused certain Mail messages to be reformatted with small text. Apple has also fixed an issue that caused the search field in Mail app to disappear. For Apple Watch, the tech giant has added average pace and distance to workout summaries in the Activity app for outdoor wheelchair walk pace and outdoor wheelchair run pace.
