Slick GoPro Stabilizer Takes The Shakes And Bumps Out Of Video

Updated on

GoPro action cameras are known for capturing the thrill of the moment. Unfortunately for many professionals, it also captures all the shakes and bumps. Of course, users can stabilize the raw footage with software stabilization, but it lowers the resolution of your video. Now Slick has developed a motorized GoPro stabilizer that takes all the shakes and bumps out of the action, making your video look more pro.

How does this GoPro stabilizer work?

GoPro Hero’s wide-angle lens is pretty good at smoothing out the footage. But when recording “bumpy” activities, some shakes do produce a dizzying experience. Rather than directly attaching your GoPro camera to something, you can put it into a Slick stabilizer and then attach the stabilizer to your drone, helmet or any other standard GoPro mount.

Slick comes with a removable 900mAh battery that can be charged over micro USB. The battery lasts two hours per charge. Just charge the stabilizer’s battery and put your GoPro in it with or without the waterproof housing and you are ready to go. Slick uses a 3-axis accelerometer, three gyroscopes, and a magnetometer to detect the shakes and bumps. It adjusts the pitch, roll and yaw of the camera using three brushless motors. The motorized stabilizer itself is waterproof.

Slick works with most of the GoPro cameras

Romain Dillet of TechCrunch tried a Slick prototype first-hand. He said the stabilizer was amazing especially when you look around. Instead of recording the sudden movements, the camera smoothly moves from one angle to another. This accessory may not be for everyone. But a large number of GoPro video professionals may find it useful. It works with almost all the GoPro cameras, including the recently announced Hero4 Session.

Slick launched it Tuesday with an Indiegogo campaign. The startup has priced it at $199, and plans to start shipping the accessory in March 2016.
