YotaPhone 2: Russian e-Ink Android Smartphone is Coming Soon

Updated on

YotaPhone 2, the next generation e-ink Android smartphone from Yota Devices, a Russian smartphone manufacturer is coming soon. The company is hoping to succeed with its unique-dual screen device (colored LCD display and electronic paper display).

The Russian smartphone manufacturer is offering a range of smartphones, but its YotaPhone series is unique because it comes with a rear e-ink display, which is similar to the screen used on Kindle from Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) or other e-book readers.

The low-powered e-ink screen was specifically designed for users to check notifications, send and receive messages and emails while the main screen was intended for video playback, apps.

Yota Devices introduced its first YotaPhone last year. The company sold its first generation YotaPhone for around $600 in Russia and $675 across Europe. Although the smartphone was unique, it failed to attract many users because of poor quality and limited apps, and the price is high.

The company resolved those problems as technology observers saw improvements on the main and e-ink screen of the YotaPhone 2 during the MWC mobile trade show last February.

YotaPhone 2 specs

The YotaPhone 2 sports 4.7-inch e-ink (electronic paper display) and a 5-inch AMOLED full HD 1920×1080 touch screen. It has an 8MP AF, LED flash main camera and a 2.1 MP rear camera.

The smartphone is powered by Android 4.4 KitKat operating system from Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz quad-core CPU. It has a 2GB RAM and 332 GB eMMC.

The YotaPhone 2 is integrated with several sensors including accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, proximity sensor and ambient light sensors. Its connectivity include WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (VHT20, MSC 8), MicroUSB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.0 NFC, A-GPS + GLONASS and Nano-SIM.

YotaPhone 2 Pricing

Technology observers commented that the price of the YotaPhone 2 is expensive at £550 unlocked or approximately $860.

The company is now accepting direct pre-orders for YotaPhone 2 from consumers in United Kingdom or other European countries through its website. The actual date of its availability in the market is still unknown. Yota’s website just indicated December 2014
