Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) Changes Its Logo But Remains Silent About It

Updated on

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has quietly changed its logo and aired it during recent trailers for Orange is the New Black and its other original series. The new logo has a white background with red letters and replaces the red backdrop of  the old Netflix logo, which had white shadowed letters.

No definite reason for Netflix silence

The streaming video service company is unusually quiet on this latest development, as if it never happened at all. Moreover, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) did not answer messages or phone calls from CNN or any other media outlet. There is not even an announcement of the new logo on the social media pages of the company, its website or on the red DVD envelopes.

Generally it has been seen that big brands prefer not to be vocal when they make some changes in the established logo. For instance, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) did not talk about its logo change in September last year.

Mark Wilson for Fast Company said, “Maybe Netflix is afraid that loyal customers will be disgusted by the new design, like what happened with the Gap a few years back, so they’d like to pass the baton from one logo to another slowly and quietly.”

It may also be possible that Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is not organized and has not made a decision as to what it’s doing yet. There have been mixed reactions from customers after the new logo appeared.

Mixed reactions from viewers

A post on Brand New suggested that “even blurry” is better than the previous one, as the new one has a cleaner look in the absence of any stroke or shadow. The post also says the smaller gap between the letters gives it a feel of more cohesive unit.

However, a Reddit commenter said that it is not at all impressive. The user said that the previous logo is reminiscent of the cinema and still looks pretty sharp. Some say that Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has changed the logo to indicate that the service is now not mainly for movies. Though they are producing original TV-style content, they’re losing on the cinema aspect with nothing to replace it.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) will soon release the third season of Orange is the New Black after two enormously hit previous seasons. In 2013, Orange is the New Black became Netflix’s most-watched series, and actress Taylor Schilling was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. She lost out to Robin Wright of House of Cards, another Netflix original.
