A recent report regarding future iPads indicated it may have a longer battery life and IGZO displays. Future iMacs may also have these devices. Patently Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shared a report from a Korean IT news website. They explained, “The sources are stating that Sharp is sinking its teeth into raising the production of IGZO panels while LG Display is upgrading its AMOLED and LCD production lines to ones capable of rolling out IGZO panels.”

What Is IGZO?

IGZO is made from indium gallium zinc oxider. It’s sometimes used in Thin Film Transistors so it can control a supporting but non-conducting substrates like glass. Since oxide semiconductors work about ten times faster than amorphous silicon in electron ability.

Apple Reported In Talks With LG And Sharp

Reportedly, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been talking to LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:066570) (KRX:066575) and Sharp Corporation (TYO:6753) about display production. The sources report that Sharp is increasing the production of their IGZO screens while LG is in the works of upgrading their existing OLED and LCD production lines to create the needed displays.

According to CNET, benefits for the IGZO displays including, “The thin-film transistors used in the screens can let more light in through the back, allowing for brighter displays. The number of blacklit LEDs can also be reduced, cutting the overall cost. Finally, IGZO displays use a high pixel density, which reduces the strain on the battery, leading to a longer battery life.”

Charles Annis from DisplaySearch made a speculation that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) could tag Sharp to supply displays for the iPad 3 last year but his prediction was obviously wrong. If this rumor is true, Sharp may have a lot of work in prepping the orders.
