Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has had some trouble in recent years, but a core of dedicated fans have always stuck with the company, and touted the unique features that make BlackBerry smart phones the best on the market. Any dedicated crowd has the propensity to turn militant, however, and Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) may feel the backlash of its Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) rejection.
Blackberry (BBRY) Users Begin The Boycott In Crackberry.com
According to Richard Goodwin over at knowyourmobile.com, BlackBerry users are planning a boycott of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) services after it was announced that Netflix would not be offering its video streaming services on the new BB10 smartphones. According to knowyourmobile, the boycott began in the new Crackberry.com forums.
The following message appeared in the forums acting as a sort of call to arms for Blackberry lovers;
“Attention All Netflix Blackberry Users: Boycott Netflix, Cancel All Subscriptions, Home and MobileThat’s right all and when asked why are you cancelling, make damn sure you tell them cause Netflix will not be on Blackberry Devices. I hope its MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN REVENUE LOSS.I cancelled 3 Netflix Accounts and a 2 More will be cancelled at my parents place and a 1 more at my brothers place. This is BS and the CEO or whatever Hastings is a DAMN *****. “
Boycotts have been an effective tool in changing corporate opinion in the past, but it seems unlikely that the rage of a small number of BB10 advocates will change the mind of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) management. There is only one major problem with this particular boycott, mass participation is necessary, and it’s unlikely to appear.
Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) only commands a very small part of the entire smart phone market right now, and not all of those are militant fans of the company, visiting forums and willing to spend time punishing Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) for a perceived slight. Most are happy to use their device in peace, and that means only a small proportion of BB10 users will join the boycott.
That leaves Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) lovers fighting against the Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) move. The issue is hardly romantic or inspiring. BB10 may get a Netflix app at some point in the future, but this campaign will not push the company.
