Sony has now confirmed that the AVG antivirus app is causing Xperia E5 battery drainage and overheating issues.
After multiple users on the Xperia forums complained about Xperia E5 battery drainage issues – with the battery quickly shooting down to empty after reaching 50% – a member of the support team took to the threads in order to confirm that the issue was with the new AVG antivirus app update, and that they had asked the company to fix the issue with a new patch.
“You may experience that the battery drains quickly or becomes unusually hot on your Xperia E5. This is known behaviour caused by the AVG Protection/Antivirus app version 6.10.9 (released May 22nd 2018). We have asked AVG to release a new version to fix this issue as soon as possible.”
In order to address the overheating issues and Xperia E5 battery drainage, the Sony employee asked users to temporarily disable AVG protection until the software company is able to come up with a fix. This is a short-term remedy, but having the lack of protection from the AVG antivirus can obviously become an issue. AVG seems to be aware of the overheating issues and Xperia E5 battery drainage, however, so it’s likely we’ll see a fix sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, there is a workaround that will correct the behaviour immediately. Simply follow the instructions below to disable AVG Protection/Antivirus.
- To disable AVG Protection
- From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
- Find and tap Settings > Apps.
- Tap AVG Protection.
- Tap DISABLE.
- Confirm by tapping DISABLE APP.”
It remains to be seen how quickly and effectively the Sony Xperia E5 battery drainage and overheating issues get resolved, but it’s in the company’s best interest to get everything squared away as quickly as possible.
With how much we rely on our phones these days to stay connected, it’s clear that a problem that can cause the battery to nose dive quite quickly is a serious issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
Updates to the AVG software should fix the issue, but the ball is in that company’s court as far as fixing the Xperia problems. Sony either needs to put further pressure on the company or perhaps seek out other options if they are to keep their phones competitive with the rest of the industry.
It’s understandable for technology updates to have their share of issues, but one that tanks the battery so quickly is definitely inexcusable if it lasts too much longer.
