Uber is reportedly teaming with GM’s car-sharing arm, Maven, to launch a 90-day pilot program that will let San Francisco drivers rent GM vehicles for $179 a week, plus taxes and fees. While this isn’t Uber’s first partnership offering better access to cars—the company works with Enterprise on a similar program—it is curious considering GM’s relationship with Uber’s main competitor, Lyft.
Earlier this year, GM and Lyft announced a partnership allowing Lyft drivers to rent GM vehicles, and the companies are also working to roll out a pilot program for a fleet of self-driving taxis, likely fueled by the technology GM acquired with the $1 billion purchase of Cruise. There were even rumors in August that GM had made a bid to buy Lyft for $6 billion. Peculiar, then, to see GM cozy up with Uber.
