Seriously, it’s no joke, an all-electric Tesla Model S has beaten a Porsche 911 Turbo S in an acceleration test. And with it, this latest version the P100D became the world’s first production road car to hit 60mph in under 2.3 seconds!
Tesla Model S Performance
Conducted by the motoring publication MotorTrend the Model S was put through its paces with the November released Porsche 911 Turbo S.
Weighing in at 5,062 with full gear and of course, a driver. Not many embarking on this test believed car enthusiast and Tesla CEO’s performance predictions for the Tesla Model S. Earlier he confidently stated that Easter egg ludicrous mode would enable the car to reach 60mph is 2.4 seconds. Additionally, he said that the distance of a quarter of a mile would be covered in 10.6 seconds. However, to what must have been an astounded Musk, the Model S P100D surpassed even his expectations!
Having bested the Porsche from a standstill, it continued to stay ahead at 30, 40, 50, and 60 mph which it reached in 2.3 seconds. Until finally crossing the line in not 10.6, but 10.5 seconds, meaning it broke all expectations.
ludicrous Easter Egg mode
The question on everyone’s lips is “How did it manage this incredible acceleration?” The short answer according to MotorTrend is:
Launching a Tesla Model S P100D in full-on Ludicrous Easter-egg mode. Allows it to snap your body in a manner that is utterly impossible to replicate in any other street-legal production car on standard tires and dry asphalt at a mid-$100,000 price point.
However, in reality, ludicrous Easter Egg mode was a Tesla Motors over-the-air software update. One which added an Easter egg to the Ludicrous performance mode. This update enabled the Tesla Model S P100D variants and the Model X to accelerate faster.
Replicating the Performance
If you’re lucky enough to own a Tesla Model S P100D and have a friend with the Porsche 911 Turbo S., All you need is around half a mile of private road, somewhere that the police won’t arrest you, and you too can replicate this test!
Now before you put the pedal to the metal, you need to have the latest software. The update you’re looking for is v8.0 release 2.52.22. Next, you will have to go through the process of setting up ludicrous Easter Egg mode, which is as follows:
To start with, select the Settings menu. Find Acceleration, then press and hold the Ludicrous button for five seconds. This will cause the display to flash, and followed by the question: “Are you sure you want to push the limits? This will cause accelerated wear of the motor, gearbox, and battery.”
Additionally, and having been created by someone with a sense of humor, you will next be faced with: “No, I want my Mommy,” and “Yes, bring it on!” Selecting the latter will begin a process of battery and motor conditioning. This conditioning will see the battery temperature raised and the electric motors are cooled.
So, once you’ve completed the above, wait for the display to say all is ready. Next, hold the brake, press down on the accelerator, and quickly release it to start launch-control mode. Finally, hold the brake for a second while pressing the go pedal. And that’s it; you can see if your Tesla Model S will make it one-quarter of a mile in 10.5 seconds and accelerate to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds.
