Android is arguably the most popular mobile OS in the world, for which a new updated version is released each year. Right now, people are still waiting to get their hands on Nougat. But, that hasn’t stopped Google from working on the very next version, which is tentatively known as Android O. As for when you can get it, it’s available right now as a public beta with the final release just a few months away. And that begs the question, which handsets manufacturers will be ready for it?

We’re going to take a look at what Samsung, Motorola, Sony, Huawei, LG, OnePlus and even Nokia have to say on the matter.

Android O Compatible Phones

For those of you, who do not want to wait for the official release/update from your manufacturer. You can get the beta now; however, your handset must be compatible to do so. Right now the only information available points to the following handsets as the only ones that are compatible.

  • Pixel
  • Pixel XL
  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6P
  • Pixel C
  • Nexus Player

Now, if you’re lucky enough to an owner of one of the above devices, you’re going to want to know how to get Android O now. To do that follow these instructions.

  1. Visit android.com/beta and sign-up for the Android Beta Program
  2. Next sign into your Google account
  3. Your compatible handset will be listed on the following page, click to enroll in the Beta Program
  4. Updates will now arrive over the air directly to your handset

Unfortunately, if your Android smartphone was not on the above compatibility list. That means you will need to read on for the latest from the manufacturer of your device.

Samsung

Speaking from experience, we can tell you that Samsung for such a smartphone giant, is slow at rolling out updates. As such, you could probably have to wait until this time next year before getting Android O. Having said that Samsung like other manufacturers keeps its cards close to its chest, so a surprise early update could happen, although unlikely.

Additionally, in the past, the South Korean firm has produced beta’s for the likes of Nougat, and Marshmallow before it. So, we fully expect, the company to launch an Android O Beta program for its current flagships the Galaxy S8 and S8+. In fact, it’s possible that we could see one for the Note 8 in the future.

HTC

With HTC’s U11 squeezy smartphone having just been launched, it’s no surprise that the company has announced plans to support Android O. As for other handsets from its line-up, there’s no information available, but, unlike Samsung, HTC is a quick updater. Meaning, that it’s possible the newer of the company’s existing handsets could get updated to Android O before the end of the year.

LG

Unfortunately, for LG G6 owners, there has been absolutely no word from the manufacturer about Android O. Plus there has been nothing revealed about its support for older devices too. Right now, it appears that LG is focussed on continuing rolling out Nougat, that’s what the G6 was released running on.

As alway’s, we will keep our eye out for new information, and as soon as there is something we will share it.

Motorola

Earlier this month Motorola took the wrapper of its Moto G4 Plus, which is essentially a mid-range device. However, what’s surprising about this, is, Motorola plans to update it to Android O later this year. As for other Motorola handsets, there’s good news, it looks like the Z, G, and M series are all going to get a taste of Android O. Here’s a list of devices including when the update can be expected.

Considering the Moto Z series is the flagship line, handsets in it are expected to be updated first, and they include the following. For which, the update is expected to happen in November this year.

  • Z-Droid
  • Z Play
  • Moto Z
  • Z Play Droid
  • Z Force Droid ( Verizon exclusive in the USA)
  • Z2 (2017)

As for the Moto G Series, it will get an update after the Moto Z series, The handsets expected to get it in December this year, and are as follows.

  • G4
  • G5 Plus
  • Moto G5
  • G4 Plus
  • G4 Play (Not Confirmed)

Huawei

Huawei, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, usually staggers Android updates across different regions. Which is a practice, almost akin to Samsung’s which leads to a long wait for handset owners. As for when it, will be upgrading to Android O, it is yet to release its plans. However, we suspect, that 2018 is a good bet, for when we will start to see it rollout across the company’s handset lineup.

Sony

Unfortunately, Sony and its update process have long been an enigma, even to long time users of its phones. As such, there is little of note worth saying about when Android O may appear on a Xperia device near you. As alway’s as soon as we know more, we will keep share it with you.

OnePlus

Unlike with Samsung, Sony, Huawei, and LG, OnPLus has serious plans to keep the users of its handsets updated quickly. In fact, just yesterday OnePlus, CEO, Peter Lau announced on Twitter, that the OnePlus 3 and 3T would get Android O. As for an exact date or month for this update, Lau failed to elaborate when questioned, but it’s thought before December 2017 is likely.

As for the upcoming OnePlus 5, Lau did not mention it either, but, according to Android Authority, it too will get Android O. Whether it will come running this latest version of the popular OS out of the box is another matter.
