Once the site of the world’s largest landfill, Staten Island’s Freshkills Park will soon be home to one of the city’s largest parks as well as its largest solar panel array.

The project is being built by SunEdison on 47 acres of the former landfill and has the potential to produce 10 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power 2,000 homes. Upon the completion of construction, the facility will provide power to the city via Con Edison’s electric grid. The solar farm will consist of 30,000-35,000 solar panels and is set to come online in 2016.

“Honestly, I don’t even know about a site this large in the world,” [SunEdison’s Attila] Toth said. “This is a very innovative solution, and this kind of thinking does not happen in every city around the nation.”
