Nokia Lumia 900 users may be getting a software update they’ve been looking forward to for some time.  Engadget secured a memo from AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) which stated that a Lumia upgrade will be available on January 30th. The upgraded improvements include a new start screen, new theme colors, Bing’s “image of the day” lock screen option, improved marketplace, improved API, improvements in quality and security, and improved lock screen accidental wipe protection.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that it will include any of the tweaks Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) mentioned last year. It probably will include the Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) features like ringtone application maker, Cinematic GIF creator, Bluetooth updates, and Smart Group Shot. The new update will weigh about 100MB.

This update won’t be available for smartphones that run Windows 8 operating system.

Could all of this mean a brighter future for Nokia? A recent article suggests that it could be a possibility. The company’s Q4 results from last year prove that the company is on the rebound. Thanks to their total number of  86.3 mobile phone sales, a number comprised of 9.3 million Asha and 4.4 million million Lumia smartphones. Although the Windows smartphone has finally outsold Symbian phones, it still cannot match the sales of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone (which garnered a total of 47.8 million) or Samsung’s Galaxy S III (136 million).

The Nokia Lumia 900 remains a good smartphone alternative for those who don’t want an Apple or Android smartphone. These phones feature 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 4.3″ display with AMOLED ClearBlack glass touchscreen, Bluetooth, Micro USB, Wi-Fi capabilities, 3.5mm AHJ connector, and USB 2.0 High-Speed. It also comes with 16GB internal storage and access to SkyDrive Cloud Storage.

The Nokia Lumia 900 upgrade may help create more consumer interest in the smartphone and the brand itself. It could possibly boost sales for the Q1 2013 if the company plays its cards right.
