Attenborough and his two brothers grew up on the campus of the University College in Leicester, where his father Frederick worked as a principal. His mother worked as the secretary for the Leicestershire Committee.

David’s elder brother was an actor and director, while his younger brother was an executive at the Italian car manufacturer. His parents also fostered two Jewish refugee girls from Germany as part of the Refugee Children’s Movement during WWII.

After graduating in 1947, Attenborough briefly served in the Royal Navy, and then worked for a publishing company. He initially applied for a radio talk producer position with the BBC, which was rejected, but he got a three-month training course at the network.
