Microsoft’s Windows 8, the struggling operating system, is going to receive an update which was codenamed as Windows Blue. But now it has been confirmed by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) that Windows Blue will indeed be called Windows 8.1, officially.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 8.1 As Official Name For 'Blue' Update

This information was revealed by Tami Reller, chief marketing officer and CFO of Microsoft’s Windows division, during a speech at J.P. Morgan’s Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in Boston.

Windows 8.1, will be available for download for free for existing Windows 8 users through the Windows Store. With this update, the company will be fixing their mistakes, but at this time, we don’t know if Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has still done anything about bringing the Start button back from the dead. The absence of a Start button is the most controversial topic of Windows 8.

The software giant is expected to provide more details about improvements and changes in Windows 8.1 at its Build developer conference in June. Public preview of Windows 8.1 will be available starting on June 26, at the conference in San Francisco. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) says that the preview will be available for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Reller says that the update will hit before the winter holidays. The company will give its hardware partners enough time to install the update on devices that would hit the shelves in shopping season.

Well, we just hope that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows 8.1 update finally impresses us. Any thoughts on this new update?
