With the iPhone 6s now in the public domain, analysts and critics are getting to grips with the qualities of this handset. One of the areas where Apple’s iPhone series has sometimes been criticized is with regard to battery life. This is obviously a critical component of any smartphone, as consumers naturally would like to keep the number of times that they have to charge their devices down to a bare minimum. Unfortunately, as both Apple and Android handsets have become more complicated, so battery life has significantly diminished.

iPhone battery life travails

So Apple was under pressure to improve this aspect of the smartphone series when the iPhone 6s was released. It has been particularly asserted in some quarters that the iPhone 6s under-performed next to its Android rivals, even though the iPhone 6 Plus provided better battery life than the iPhone 6. The larger cell included in the iPhone 6 Plus ensured that it delivered significantly more battery time than the smaller cousin of the phablet, but how do the two iPhone 6s models compare to the last generation?

It perhaps didn’t bode particularly well that Apple has in fact utilized smaller batteries in both iPhone 6s models due to space considerations. It seems that as smartphones become ever more complicated pieces of technology, so there is also a drive to manufacture them in ever slimmer guises.

The iPhone 6s generation sees Apple clear space in order to accommodate the taptic engine required for 3D Touch. Even though better battery life is an important aspect of the iPhone 6s, this was undoubtedly considered essential, particularly as Apple has strongly emphasized this new aspect of the iPhone 6s range in its commercial promotion of the product.

But despite the fact that Apple was forced to reduce the anticipated battery size, the consumer electronics giant always maintained that the iPhone 6s would deliver excellent battery life. It was suggested that a combination of hardware advances coupled with power saving functionality included in iOS 9 would deliver an excellent handset in this department.

iPhone benchmarking impresses

And it seems based on recent benchmarking of the iPhone series that the iPhone 6s is indeed a massive improvement over its predecessor. Whereas the iPhone range has lagged behind the Samsung Galaxy in terms of battery life, the new iPhone 6s seemingly eliminates this gulf completely.

According to the battery life benchmarking test carried out by Phone Arena, both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus perform commendably. The battery life of the iPhone 6s lasts eight hours and 15 minutes, outlasting a number of major smartphones, including the Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6, and HTC One M9. Only the Galaxy S6 Active and Xperia Z3 Compact lasted longer than the iPhone 6s.

This is a massive improvement of over 50 percent compared to the iPhone 6, which lasted for five hours and 20 minutes in the same benchmarking test. The smaller iPhone 6s even outperformed last year’s phablet, with the iPhone 6 Plus dying after six hours and 32 minutes. It is a pretty impressive technical achievement to so clearly outperform the iPhone 6s Plus with a significantly smaller battery.

Naturally enough, the iPhone 6s Plus outperforms the smaller smartphone in the series, lasting for nine hours and 11 minutes in the same benchmarking test. Interestingly, this is exactly the same result that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 achieved, indicating that there is literally nothing to choose between the two market-leading tablets in this department.

Apple will doubtless be relieved that its smartphone has performed so well in the first battery life benchmarking test. When one considers the unequalled cachet of the iPhone series, combined with increased battery life and the new 3D Touch engine, the overall package offered by the iPhone series suddenly becomes an extremely attractive one.

iPhone 6s sales encouraging

Perhaps it is not surprising then that the iPhone 6s has performed extremely well in its embryonic existence. Early reports indicate that the latest iPhone unit has soared to a record 13 million units just last weekend, improving on the performance of the iPhone 6 by 30 percent.

Particularly important in the performance of the iPhone 6s has been the Chinese marketplace, where Apple is becoming increasingly dominant. It was reported last year that Apple is now shifting more iPhone units in the world’s most populous nation than in the United States, and it is clear that China is becoming an absolutely critical marketplace for the California-based company.

Apple sales in China were between 3 and 4 million units over the first release weekend of the iPhone 6s, and it is this marketplace that has been largely responsible for the growth in iPhone 6s sales. Analysts suggest that sales outside of China are essentially flat from last year, emphasizing once again how important Chinese and East Asian growth is to Apple as a company.

Indeed, the results of the iPhone 6s to some extent vindicate the opinion of the city. It is suggested that Apple will struggle to continue to achieve growth in its major product lines, with scepticism that the Chinese marketplace will continue to expand for the consumer electronics giant. This has been reflected in the share price of Apple which has continued its generally downward trend since the release of the iPhone 6s.

ASP

It is this country that has perhaps motivated Apple to explore the possibility of producing an Apple Car. This has been a major talking point in the media in recent weeks, and news that the vehicle might materialize as early as 2019 indicates that Apple is serious about achieving a major diversification of its product range.

Nonetheless, it is important to note that the results for the iPhone 6s were still encouraging, and Apple itself has stated that it believes the larger number of iPhones 6s units in circulation will lead to greater Apple Watch adoption. Apple is to release the second generation of the smartwatch before the end of 2015, and it will be interesting to see what it has in mind to refresh a product that received a lukewarm response.

Perhaps everything isn’t going according to plan for Apple, but the corporation can at least reflect on its success in improving the battery life of the iPhone 6s.
