As they say, with Google maps, you never need to carry a paper map again. This is true in most cases, but sometimes because of network disconnection in areas such as subways, Google maps cannot be of any use. That’s where a life saving feature of Google Maps for Android can help you.

When you think that you are heading to a place where 3G and internet connection is not working, you can save maps for offline use. You can save maps of upto six large metro areas with your working internet connection before you head over to those areas. Once you download the maps, they are stored on your smartphone which can be viewed offline also.

Note that if you are not able view this “Make available offline” from the menu, then you probably need to update Google Maps app.

Google Maps will now display the file size of the map which you want to download. Tap on “Done” to confirm this step and the download process will start.

What’s more, if you have a GPS enabled phone (as most Android phones are), then you can activate GPS for free which will guide you with the exact location on the map, without requiring any internet or data connection.

This feature is very useful for those who are not always connected to the internet and also for those who want to save money using data or 3G connection. Users can simply download the map and then head to that location, without worrying about any data transfer rates.
