GoPro Adds Hero+ Camera To Lineup, Slashes Hero 4 Session’s Price

Updated on

GoPro announced the upcoming release of a new camera in its action camera line, the Hero+. The camera will be available on the GoPro website as well as chosen retail locations beginning October 4.

What does it offer?

Firstly, the Hero+ comes in at an interesting price point for GoPro ahead of the holiday shopping season. GoPro’s cheapest offering in its 2015 product line is the Hero which retails around $130. Prior to today’s announcement, the next camera (price-wise) was the Hero+ LCD which jumps all the way up to $300. The steep price increase owes to a number of features that truly the dwarf the capabilities of the Hero. Between the two, lies the new addition to the Hero line with the Hero+ to be sold around $200.

The Hero can only shoot at 1080p and 30fps, however it can shoot at 60fps when set at 720p. Both the Hero+ and the Hero+ can record in two resolutions: 1080p at 60 frames per second (fps) and 720p at 60 fps. Essentially, the major difference and between the two and the reason the Hero+ LCD sells at $100 more than the Hero+ is the fact that the former has a touchscreen. Both take burst photos at 5ps, stills at 8 megapixels and both have built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality.

With the addition of the Hero+, GoPro now offers six action cameras with the three aforementioned “entry-level” cameras joining the Hero 4 Black, Hero 4 Silver and Hero 4 Session which bring more features to the table.

GoPro cuts price on Hero4 Sessions

Sales of the nearly micro Session, have been lagging behind GoPro’s expectations. Released earlier this year, the Sessions was the first GoPro camera that was completely waterproof without a housing. The lack of a housing made it the smallest of GoPro’s action cameras.

However, at $400 it presented consumers with quite the choice. At $400, the Session cost the same as the considerably more feature rich Hero4 Silver.

But with today’s announcement that the Session will now be sold for $300, some of this customer confusion should abate.

While the Hero+ wont be released until Sunday, the Session’s new prices takes effect today.
