Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Nexus device lineup is very popular because of two key points – super affordability and powerful tech specs. Buying a Nexus device also means timely Android updates, which no other company can promise. Devices like Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 offer a high-end Android experience for a budget price. However, Google is apparently takings its strategy a step further and introducing a sub-$100 Nexus smartphone.

This report comes from the Chinese website MTKSJ, who believes that Google might release this new Nexus smartphone for less than $100. This would be the most affordable Nexus device yet, and as the price makes clear, it would be an entry level to mid-range device.

Rumored sub $100 Nexus smartphone might feature MediaTek processor

The device would reportedly utilize a MediaTek processor, and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is already said to be working with the Taiwanese chipmaker to develop the processor for this new Nexus handset. However, not many details are known at the current date. It is also not known who will partner with Google to build the low cost Nexus device, but if we’re to guess, we suspect it would be either LG or Asus.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is also said to be working on a new high-end Nexus 8.9-inch tablet, which the company is planning on releasing this year, and HTC is said to be the manufacturer of this new tablet. This would be the first time that HTC has been involved in developing a Nexus-based device by partnering with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG). A new high-end Nexus 6 smartphone is also rumored to be released later this year.

Previously we heard the rumor that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) will stop releasing new products under the Nexus brand, and will only sell Google Play Edition devices in the future. However, no strong evidence has been uncovered to support this rumor.

More details regarding Google devices will be released during the Google I/O developer conference in June. Stay tuned and we’ll bring you all the latest details.
