Google Drive Gets An Update: Docs, Sheets Can Be Accessed Offline

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced that Google Drive now supports automatic syncing of all your Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. In addition to that, you can now also create and edit drawings offline. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) says that both of these features will be available to all users within a few days, as the company slowly completes the rollout process.

However, before you start using these features, you’ll need to enable offline access in Google Drive or else you won’t be able to view, create or edit any files. Also the syncing process won’t be started automatically.

Let’s learn how to enable the offline access in Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Drive. Please note that offline access is available only when you’re using Chrome or a Chrome OS device. If you’re using Chrome OS, then there’s no need to complete any steps, as offline access is enabled by default.

  1. Login to your Google Drive and click on More from the left side of the screen.
  2. Select Offline Docs.
  3. Click on the blue button that says Get the app. If you have already installed the app, then there’s no need to complete this step.
  4. You’ll be taken to Chrome Web Store. Click on Add to Chrome to install this app.
  5. Once installed, you’ll be taken to a Chrome page with the Google Drive app icon. To return to Drive, click the Google Drive icon.
  6. From the right side of the dialog on the Offline Docs page, click the blue button that says Enable Offline.

This new feature making files available offline has many advantages. You don’t need to remember a specific file to sync to your device before getting disconnected from the Internet. It will sync up all your files, without the need to manually do anything. Now you don’t need to worry about that subway, where there’s no network, or any such similar place.

For now, it’s not clear if Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is planning to bring this feature to other browsers too. We’ll keep you posted with any new Google’s announcements regarding this.
