Garmin just introduced two new VIRB camera models. Both are set to be released this summer. The cameras feature a one-inch display with a waterproof design that’s good for up to 50 meters. The cameras don’t require a case for underwater shots.
The Garmin VIRB X and VIRB XE models also feature more mounting options. They come with enhanced audio and video modes and a wide range of built-in sensors, including GPS, a gyroscope and an accelerometer. The camera can also access other external sensors, including wireless external sensors to integrate sensor data into videos.

The new cameras also offer ANT+, Wi-Fi and ANT+. One great example of the use of external sensors is when cyclists overlay power data from the Garmin Vector power meter. They can also show other data, including G-loading during flight and other action-related data which integrates with videos from Garmin’s G-Metrix system. The company’s vice president of worldwide sales, Dan Bartel, explained how the updated design, built-in sensors and enhanced recording options show a bold step forward. His company is excited to bring the cameras to the market and to see how Garmin camera users make the most of their cameras.
Camera comparison
The VIRB X shoots at 1080p/30fps and 720p/60fps and offers slow-motion and zoom options. The VIRB XE can shoot at 1440p/30fps and 1080p/60fps. It features super slow motion, a variety of zoom levels and image stabilization. Both options have the ability to capture still photos and do photo bursts of up to 12MP image quality.
The latter model also comes with a Pro Mode, featuring more advanced camera options such as sharpness control, white/black color contrast, exposure bias, ISO limit and color profile channel. The new Wi-Fi features allow users to connect to the VIRB smartphone app as well. The app enables users to set up shots and view what is being recorded, as well as multiple cameras.
