DISH Network Corp (DISH) Enhances Hopper Device

Updated on

DISH Network Corp. (DISHAnalyst Report) – the second-largest satellite TV operator in the U.S. after DIRECTV (DTVAnalyst Report) – continues to enrich its award winning Hopper device by offering HDMI-CEC technology to control viewer’s TV set.

DISH Network will be the first Pay-TV operator to deliver such service with its upgraded program called Denver. This will be the fifth occasion that its Hopper device has been enhanced during the year. We believe that such upgrades will help the company to stay well ahead of its rivals.

The HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) function will automatically implement the user’s personalized viewing adjustments when the Hopper device is switched on.

Apart from the inclusion of HDMI-CEC technology, DISH Network has augmented its HD DVR box by launching five new apps, namely, On Demand Shelves, DISH Explorer, Search, Programming guide and Help.

Higher proliferation of smartphones and tablets coupled with enormous success of the third-party applications available on Apple Inc.’s (AAPLAnalyst Report) iOS and Google Inc.’s (GOOGAnalyst Report) Android platform, has induced Dish to allow third-party application developers to build programs on the company’s application programming interface (API). This will enable users to operate Dish’s Hopper devices more easily.

DISH Network’s Hopper DVR device is already quite popular. The implementation of the open source platform concept coupled with the continuous introduction of new apps has helped the company to gain 35,000 pay-TV subscribers in the recently concluded third quarter of 2013. Moreover, its churn and average revenue per user has improved over the same time frame.

Currently, DISH Network carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
