Apple Woos Greenpeace In New Ad [VIDEO]

Updated on

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is continuing to do its best to stay on Greenpeace’s good side. That, at the very least, appears to be the intended effect of a new ad release from the company. The video, which is available on YouTube to those interested, touts the company’s success at increasing its environmental friendliness.

The firm’s attempts to get environmental opinion makers on its side have worked in recent years. After getting pretty poor results in a Greenpeace report on its environmental friendliness, the company has been improving its processes to reduce their environmental impact. In last month’s Greenpeace report Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was given an almost perfect score.

Apple brags about greenness in “Better” ad

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) sells its environmental improvement in its latest advertisement. The video, which was released in a timely manner as Earth Day hits tomorrow, says that the company is committed to using greener materials, using less packaging and keeping the iPhone 5S out of landfills. The ad also emphasized the company’s success with sourcing energy from renewable sources.

Cupertino has managed its reputation better than almost any other company, and it’s managed to move products on the back of initiatives like Product RED. The company’s environmental endeavors are to be applauded, but that doesn’t mean the company is perfect. Clever accounting makes light of much of the company’s impact of the world around it, and nobody should believe Apple’s advertising wholeheartedly.

Cleanliness sits next to godliness at Apple

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has demonstrated its environmental prowess time and time again in recent years, and the company can’t afford to slow down now. The firm can little afford to be slandered with the claims of one NGO or another, and actively works to reduce its exposure to bad business. The most notable efforts in recent years have been in the company’s treatment of contracted workers, and its environmental record.

The problem with assessing the environmental impact of a company in today’s day and age is that off outsourcing. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) designs and sells smartphones. It offers software services. Neither of these are particular environmentally damaging. Manufacturing, something that Apple designs and controls but does not, for the most part, own, is where much of the waste is created.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) avoids that waste being counted, and hides some of the company’s true environmental impact. Almost every other company on the face of the earth does the same from worker’s rights right down the line to product safety, but that doesn’t make Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) any less disingenuous. The company may be heading toward a 100% renewable energy future, but that supposes the appearance of the iPhone 6 from thin air.
