It has now been more than a year since the Apple Watch was released, and the attention is now turning towards what Apple may produce with the Apple Watch 2. According to Wearable.com, analysts believe that Apple has sold a remarkable 12 million smartwatches, which makes it the market leader and also makes a great case for the launch of a new device.

I’m expecting to see one at some point this year, and we may see or hear something around the middle of July. But until then, I’m going to share with you what the rumor mill has been suggesting we will get with the Apple Watch 2.

Apple Watch 2 design

Design is always a good place to start, and design rumors about the Apple Watch 2 the rumors have been rife. According to MacRumors, analyst Brian White of Drexel Hamilton said the Apple Watch 2 could be somewhere between 20% and 40% thinner!

However, well-known Apple insider Ming Chi-Kuo has said that Apple will not redesign or make any major changes to the Apple Watch 2. Instead, he said the watch will have the same tick-tock upgrade cycle that has been used with the iPhone for years. As a result, he believes that the watch will be very similar in design to the Apple Watch but feature some improved software and hardware under the hood.

Apple Watch 2 patent

Ultimate selfie camera

There have been a few hints that Apple could be about to include a camera in the Apple Watch 2. Some rumors refer to a Facetime camera being placed into the front bezel of the watch. However, details of this are hard to find.

Other rumors suggest that the watch could have what is being referred to as the “Ultimate Selfie Camera.” This rumor was first reported by Patently Apple and states that Apple has purchased patents which outline a camera fitted to a watch face.

Improved battery life

It is widely known that the current Apple Watch has some issues regarding battery life, so Apple must address this problem in the Apple Watch 2. Many features that were said to be originally planned for the first watch supposedly could not be included because of the battery problems.

However, Apple may approach the battery problem in the Apple Watch the way it did with the iPad. The company kept the battery the same size and improved the battery life through improvements in iOS. As a result, the battery in the Apple Watch 2 could be the same size as the one in the current watch.

Apple Watch 2 Rumored Specs And Features

watchOS 3

Earlier this month at its WWDC 2016 event, Apple unveiled the new OS for its smartwatch, watchOS 3. With it comes improved performance, which is supposed to shorten app opening times by up to seven times. However, the user interface of the OS has seen some redevelopment as it now has a control center, which is something like you would find on an iPhone.

There are also new fitness tracking apps and a new emergency feature. Now if you hold down the side button for just a couple of seconds, it will command your paired iPhone to call emergency services. The OS is already available in beta, with the full roll-out expected to come sometime this autumn.

Multi-function bands

MacWorld recently reported about some potential multi-function bands for the Apple Watch 2. The bands could be magnetic and offer a way to protect the watch face when the device is not being worn. The second variation of the new bands could be used as a stand. This would be made possible by bending the band, which would mean the watch could be used as a smart clock.

Waterproof Apple Watch 2

Among the most-desired features for the Apple Watch 2 is waterproofing. Bernard Desarnauts, who is the chief executive of the Apple Watch research group Wristly, has said that Apple needs to get its house in order and improve upon the IPX7 rating found on the first watch.

According to Desarnauts, the Apple Watch 2 needs to move beyond being a watch you can wash your hands while wearing and instead be something that you can wear while swimming.

Release date

There have been lots of different rumors surrounding a launch date, and they have all come and gone. The last was supposed to be at this year’s WWDC; however, Apple made it clear a week or two prior to the event that it would focus on software. The next target date we’re looking at is September with a launch alongside the iPhone 7.
