According to a recent report from Wall Street Journal, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) plans to announce a big upgrade to their iCloud Photo/Video service at their upcoming WWDC in San Francisco next month. They cited their source as someone who’s “familiar with the matter”.

Currently, their cloud-based application  only allows users to sync their photos. The upgraded version will  allow users to upload and share images publicly, it will also allow viewers to leave comments. The launch of this app isn’t their first foray into social media.

Two years ago, Apple introduced a social music application called Ping that allowed music listeners to follow their favorite artists and discover new artists. Unfortunately, Ping was not as popular as they would have liked it to be.

Apple’s new iCloud Photo/Video service will make it even easier to take and share photos with everyone. Just snap the photo,  iCloud will automatically save it and send it to all your Apple devices.  iCloud users will get the first 5gb for storage for free.

It makes a lot of sense that Apple would want to enhance their iCloud photo application, especially considering how popular it is. According to Jordan Kahn from 9 to 5 Mac, during their Q2 2012 earnings call from last month, Apple announced that iCloud now had a total of 125 million users including a 25 million increase since February.

It sounds like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has some exciting plans for the future and we can’t wait to see if this rumor turns out to be true. In all honesty, I’m surprised that Apple didn’t release an improved iCloud earlier, considering how cutting-edge this company is.  I wonder what else Apple has in mind for their other applications and programs. It will be interesting to see how Apple introduces the new iCloud and how people will respond to it, especially when you consider their acquisition of Instagram last month.
