Airbnb Books Deco In Acquihire

Updated on

Airbnb has agreed to acquire app developer Deco Software, which is already an existing partner of the peer-to-peer rental platform. The deal represents a bid to bring all of Deco’s employees on board to advance tooling for designers and engineers. To reinforce the acquihire component of the move, Deco’s leadership has clarified that Deco IDE, its principal product, will not follow the company to Airbnb. Rather, management has elected to end development support for Deco IDE, letting it instead “live on as a free and open source project.”

Deco was founded in 2015 by Gavin Owens, David Chen, Spencer Liolios and Devin Abbott. It’s Airbnb’s hope that the addition of Deco will go a long way toward expanding its existing platform by improving the ways it works with developers to build out its growing suite of services. If the deal’s completed, Deco will become Airbnb’s 13th successful M&A deal since its founding in 2008, according to the PitchBook Platform, and its seventh in the IT sector.
