Twitter Inc (TWTR) Best Tech Company To Work For; Facebook Third

Updated on

Now publicly held Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has dethroned Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) as the best technology company to work for. According to Glassdoor’s sixth annual Employee’s Choice Awards, the microblogging site is the top tech company to work for and #2 overall to work for in 2014. LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD) occupied the second spot in tech category and third overall. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) had been the favorite of employees for three consecutive years (2011, 2012 and 2013). That said, the stresses of going public seem to have had an impact on employee morale, as this year it was ranked third in tech and fifth overall.

A few surprises

Glassdoor called Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) an exceptionally transparent workplace with an ideal balance of cool work and fun. Overall, 22 tech companies made it among the overall 50 best places to work. Here is the list of top tech companies.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), which pays its employees very well and has several projects running, remains on the sixth spot this year. The list included some surprises. For example, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was ranked a lowly 35th overall, compared to 34th last year. Among tech companies, it occupied 16th place. Another surprise is the exclusion of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT). The Redmond-based software giant has failed again to make it onto the list.

Glassdoor ranks companies for the Employees’ Choice Awards based on input from employees about their job, work atmosphere and the company. The career website gets their feedback through an anonymous online survey. Glassdoor determines the overall ranking based on the consistency, quality and quantity of reviews using a proprietary algorithm. Only companies with at least 1,000 employees and 50 approved annual reviews are considered for the survey.

Bain & Co. ahead of Twitter

Overall, management consulting firm Bain & Company topped the list. Other notable non-tech companies among 50 best workplaces are Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) (#4), Nestle Purina PetCare (#10), Deere & Co. (NYSE:DE) (#11), Edelman (#12), Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX) (#14), Slalum Consulting (#15), Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ:COST) (#16), SolarCity Corp. (NASDAQ:SCTY) (#18), Gartner Inc. (NYSE:IT) (#20) and Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE:LUV) (#21).

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) shares were up 0.67% to $52.34 in pre-market trading Wednesday.
