Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is invading Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s territory by offering K12 schools the Surface RT 32 GB for just $199. This price is impressively lower than some of the Microsoft Office productivity suites. Schools that want to add a keyboard cover for the tablet will pay extra. The package with Touch Keyboard Cover will cost just $249 and the package with Type Keyboard Cover costs $289.
On Monday, Microsoft shared the details of the special discount. The offer is exclusive to the following markets: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China (via Digital China), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Microsoft Cut Back the Price of the Surface RT
Interestingly enough, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) significantly cut back the price of the Surface RT which normally sells for $499. It’s possible that Bill Gates’ company wants to clear out the inventory before releasing a new version of the Surface tablet.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) offers the iPad for $399 to educators, which is still a great deal. What’s more is that Apple’s iOS is generally safer to use and offers so much more in terms of applications.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will also give away 10,000 Surface RT tablets to teachers who attend the International Society for Technology Education. This convention will take place in San Antonio later on this month.
The Surface Tablet is Microsoft’s Answer to Apple’s iPad
The Surface Tablet is Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iPad. Although it quite hasn’t made the same splash in the tech market as the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) tablet has, there is still a demand for it. Many teachers and educators should find the Surface RT useful during class time. Technology has a huge impact in education and many schools are opting to use tablets in class to help enhance the learning experience.
Unfortunately, it will probably take a lot more to win over educators than just a low-priced tablet. If Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) wants to be successful, they will have to encourage app developers and education companies to develop more apps for the K12 market.
