The new Atom chips from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which have a new CPU architecture, will be almost three times speedier than the previous versions. These new upcoming chips, according to Intel, will be 5 times more efficient than the older ones and will oust the belief that ARM processors are more power efficient.
The new architecture, which is called Silvermont as of now, will be integrated in the Smartphones, tablets, PC’s and servers from the current year. The atom chips being designed by Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) are codenamed Bay Trail, which will be mounted in the tablets this holiday season. The chip will be compatible with both Android and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) operating systems.
Dadi Perlmutter, the chief product officer of Intel said that the new Silvermont chips will provide even better performance per watt, and there will be no difference between ARM processors and Atom chips any more.
“We see that this kind of solution will be even better,” said Perlmutter, who is also the executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group.
The upcoming Atom chips based on Silvermont will be using 22 nanometer processes. Under this technology more transistors are allowed under 3D transistors. These chips will be smaller in size and will save more on power compared to the current Atom chips which is codenamed Clover Trail and is based on the 32-nm process.
The Atom chips, before Bay Trail, were condemned for the lackluster performance compared to ARM chips, which is said to enhance the efficiency on chips. Now Intel says that its chip is as efficient as ARM since it launched the recent chip codenamed Medfield, which are being used in Smartphones.
Other than tablets, Bay trail chip can also be integrated in hybrid laptops that are convertible, detachable and have folding screens. These chips can even be put in the low priced desktops in the range of US$200 to $599. It will be up to the discretion of the user to opt for long battery hours or performance in Silvermount smartphones or tablets, says Belli Kuttanna, an Intel fellow.
“Silvermont is a complete redefinition of the Atom architecture,” Kuttanna said.
The chip maker is trying to gain some traction in the smartphone and tablet segments. The expectations of Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) are that the company will be able to attract a new chunk of PC customers with the help of Baytrail and that the chip maker will be well positioned to compete against ARM, which currently acquires major market share.
