Earnings Preview: Amgen, AT&T, Life Technologies, VMWare, Yum!

Several companies including Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), Life Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:LIFE), Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), and VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) will each report its earnings for the first quarter of the current fiscal year on Tuesday, April 23.

Earnings Preview: Amgen, AT&T, Life Technologies, VMWare, Yum!

Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), the maker of Neulasta and Neupogen drugs that helps cancer patients fight infection, is expected to report $1.84 earnings per share and $4.4 billion revenue for the first quarter of 2013 based on data compiled by Bloomberg. During the same period last year, the company posted $1.61 EPS and $4 billion revenue.

The management of the company is expected to discuss the results of its key experimental melanoma drug (TVEC), and its revenue from top selling drugs during its earnings conference call with analysts and investors. The company is also expected to provide updates regarding its other medicines that are currently tested on patients.

Analysts believe that Amgen had a good financial performance due to strong demand for its top selling drugs. The company increased the price of many of its medicines by 3 percent to 7 percent last January.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), the largest telecommunications carrier in the United States, is expected to report $0.64 earnings per share and $31.7 billion revenue for the first quarter of 2013. For the fiscal year, the consensus estimate is $2.53 earnings per share and $129 billion revenue.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) posted -$0.44 losses per share and $32.6 billion revenue, however in the same quarter last year, the company earned $0.60 per share and recorded $31.8 billion revenue. Over the past four quarters, the company’s average growth rate was 0.6 percent year-over-year.

Analysts are concerned with the current financial performance of Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) and their consensus earnings estimate is around $0.60 per share and $2.6 billion revenue.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, the company posted $0.83 earnings per share and $4.2 billion revenue. In the same period a year ago, Yum Brands posted $0.76 earnings per share and $2.7 billion revenue.

For the fiscal 2013, analysts projected that the company will report $3.05 earnings per share and $13.7 billion revenue. Majority of analysts covering the stock recommended a hold rating.

On the other hand, Life Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:LIFE) is expected to report $0.93 earnings per share and $920.8 million revenue. During the same period last year, the company posted $0.85 earnings per share and $895.9 million revenue.

For the fiscal 2013, the company is expected to record $3.99 earnings per share and $3.82 billion revenue. Majority of analysts recommended a buy rating for the shares of Life Technologies (NASDAQ:LIFE).

Meanwhile, analysts projected that VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) will report $0.46 earnings per share. The expectation of analysts is $0.1 or 2.2 percent lower compared its $0.47 earnings per share in the same period a year ago.

The consensus estimate for its revenue is around $1.18 billion, 11.8 percent higher than its revenue of $1.06 billion in the same period a year earlier.

For the fiscal year, the company is expected to post $2.25 earnings per share and $5.22 billion revenue. Majority of analysts recommended a buy rating for the shares of VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW).
