Firefox Integrates Facebook Messenger With Its Social API

Here is a good news for those who are addicted to social networking all the time. Mozilla announced on Monday, that Firefox Beta testers can upgrade to the latest version to get Facebook Messenger integrated into the web browser.

This Facebook Messenger is the first product of Mozilla’s social API, which will soon power social features from many other third-party providers.

This Facebook Messenger appears in the sidebar, and it looks and feels like a part of the browser. It looks exactly like the sidebar that appears on You can see which friends are online, check Twitter for updates, and you can also start a chat directly from sidebar. You can do all this without visiting, and directly from the website that you are visiting.

Here’s what Mozilla has to say in a blog post.

The Social API enables developers to integrate social services into the browser in a way that is meaningful and helpful to users. As services integrate with Firefox via the Social API sidebar, it will be easy for you to keep up with friends and family anywhere you go on the Web, without having to open a new Web page or switch between tabs. You can stay connected to your favorite social network even while you are surfing the Web, watching a video, or playing a game.

Mozilla says that Firefox Beta testers should see the new sidebar in next few weeks. If you are a developer, then check out a sample Social API integration on Github.

This is Mozilla’s attempt to make your browser social. The only negative point that I can see is that user’s will now be inclined more towards social networking, even while working at the office. This can become a distraction and productivity can decrease. What’s your opinion on Mozilla’s attempt?
