In Apple’s language, iOS 10 is the company’s biggest iOS update ever. The new mobile operating system is coming on September 13, three days before the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus go on sale. The iOS 10 brings tons of new features such as a revamped Control Center, a new widgets screen, a more easily accessible camera, and an improved Photos app. Apple has also given app developers some goodies by opening up Siri and iMessage to third-party developers.
Third-party developers get access to iOS 10 CallKit Extension
Apple announced at the WWDC 2016 in June that the CallKit Extension has been opened to third-party developers. It gives app developers access to the call management system in iOS 10. Popular caller ID app Truecaller has jumped in on the CallKit Extension to introduce features that were previously not available to the iOS users: live caller ID and spam protection.
Truecaller said Wednesday that its eponymous iPhone app will now be able to detect spam calls more efficiently. Truecaller has been working closely with Apple over the past few months to bring live caller ID and spam protection to the iOS 10. The company found in its early testing that spam detection rates on iOS devices jumped by more than 50% in several markets. Truecaller was able to detect more than 90% of all the spam calls made to its users, said Truecaller VP of growth and partnerships Tom Hsieh.
Truecaller also get ‘My Block List’ feature
Apple’s CallKit Extension has two parts. One allows third-party VoIP firms to tightly integrate their apps with the iPhone’s native interface. The second part is the Call Directory Extension that lets companies like Truecaller display information from their database to the native iPhone app. It will tell users whether a call is legitimate or from someone who has been previously marked as spam.
Truecaller for iOS 10 is also getting a “My Block List” feature that allows you to block and manage calls you want to receive. The iPhone users will have to manually enable Call Blocking and Identification from Settings > Phone > Call Blocking and Identification.
