However, the exclamation mark remains in the fresh logo, as well, and additionally it occasionally moves and dances. Color remains purple.

Mayer posted earlier about the logo change on Tumblr, where she explained the process under the heading “Geeking out on the Logo.”

Mayer wrote that this summer she rolled up her sleeves and dove into the trenches with the company’s logo design team Bob Stohrer, Marc DeBartolomeis, Russ Khaydarov, and intern Max Ma. The team, along with her, spent major time over a weekend designing the logo from start to finish, and fun considering every minute detail. She said that they wanted a logo reflecting Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) as “whimsical, yet sophisticated, Modern and fresh, with a nod to our history. Having a human touch, personal. Proud.”

Writes Mayer: “Our last move was to tilt the exclamation point by 9 degrees, just to add a bit of whimsy.”

Yahoo underwent many changes under Mayer

Since Mayer, a former Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) executive, joined Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) she has introduced many changes in the organization. Yahoo has redesigned its Flickr, Weather, Sports, Mail, News and Search services, and Mayer has led Yahoo to acquire string of companies.

Yahoo has undergone a turnaround process to rebound in the wake of competition from Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), who take away major portion of the market. Last month, Yahoo surpassed Google in clinching the tag for most United States web traffic.

Significant change after a long time

This is the first time Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has made any significant change to its logo. However, a few minor tweaks were given shortly after the company was incorporated by co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo, in 1995.

Allen Adamson, managing director of branding firm Landor Associates, said that brand logo conveys a message to people about the direction in which company wants to head.

Yahoo’s shares have gained over 80 percent in last year or so, but it has been primarily driven the 24 percent stake that the internet firm hold in China’s Alibaba Holdings Group, which is one of the fastest growing companies on the internet.
