Xiaomi Unveils Mi Mix 2 With 5.99-Inch Bezel-Less Display

Just days before the iPhone launch, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 2, a phone with a stunning ceramic body and 5.99-inch bezel-less display. The handset is up for pre-order and will also be available in markets outside China.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 – a special phone

When the Chinese smartphone maker launched the Mi Mix concept phone in collaboration with Philippe Starck, the minimalist phone with a big screen and small bezel dwarfed every other smartphone trend in the market. However, some stated that the design was not practical or easy to use. The same cannot be said for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, as the phone is a step ahead of its predecessors in looks and functionality.

The phone is curved on all four sides, and the frame is made out of 7000 series aluminum. The bottom bezel is 12% narrower than the bottom bezel on the Mi Mix. Xiaomi claims that its phone is smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus, despite the larger display. The Mi Mix 2 supports 43 bands in total, which is more than the Mi Note 2. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor, comes with 6GB of RAM and will be offered in 64,128 or 256 GB of internal storage.

Another thing that Xiaomi has minimized is the camera module so that it could stretch screen a little bit more. The rear camera boasts a Sony IMX382 sensor with a larger pixel size of 1.25um and 4-axis image stabilization.

Xiaomi is also offering the special edition Mix 2 with a ceramic unibody that comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Both versions come with battery power of 3,400 mAh with Quick Charge 3.0 support (9V/2A) via USB-C. Further, both versions come with an 18K pvd rose-gold-coated camera rim. The special edition also comes with the same rim on its rear-facing fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is full of feel-good features. One such feature is the “hidden sound-guided speaker,” which the company describes as “cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology.” The technology is about resonating the sound through the metal frame and delivering it through the screen with the speaker hidden completely inside the smartphone.

The ceramic unibody was a challenging task

While most phones available today have a metal or plastic unibody, the Chinese smartphone maker dared to use a ceramic casing for the special edition. Making a ceramic unibody has been quite a challenging process for Xiaomi.

According to the company, the ceramic unibody has very low yield. The process starts with pressing a special type of ceramic powder into a mold with a 240-ton force; the mold is then put into a temperature of up to 1,400 degrees Celsius for seven days. The stressful process is further complicated by the fact that the molded pieces contract by about 20% in the end. Once the ceramic is baked and ready, it is then diamond polished. Overall, the process takes about 10 days, notes Engadget.

The entry version of the Mix Mix 2 will cost about 3,299 yuan ($510), and the most expensive version will cost about 3,999 yuan ($610). The Special Edition Mi Mix 2 is priced at 4,699 yuan ($720). The regular version will be available in black, whereas the special edition will come in black and white.
