Earlier this year, Wacom came up with a cheaper alternative to the Cintiq Pro, called the Cintiq 16, costing $649. Now, the company has launched an update to its entry-level tablet, called Cintiq 22. Similar to Cintiq 16, the bigger tablet (Wacom Cintiq 22) is aimed at students and new artists who don’t have the budget for a Cintiq Pro.

“Two screen sizes means that Cintiq 16’s compact display is perfect for those on the move while Cintiq 22 offers more space for extensive strokes,” Wacom says.

Wacom’s new tablet features a 21.5-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 72% NTSC color and an anti-glare glass surface. One can easily connect it to a Mac or Windows computer using HDMI and USB 2.0 cables.

“The screen has an anti-glare film, preventing any distracting reflections. The full HD display provides great clarity, so you can see every detail on screen. The reduced parallax also gives you full control, so your cursor is where you expect to be,” Wacom says.

Like the Cintiq 16 and the Pro version, the Cintiq 22 display is compatible with Wacom’s Pro Pen 2 stylus and its 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt support. Also, the Pro Pen never needs charging. One will have to buy the Wacom ExpressKey remote or a Bluetooth keyboard separately, which will cost another $100.

“With EMR (Electro Magnetic Resonance) technology Wacom Pro Pen 2 will keep going as long as you do. It draws power from your Wacom Cintiq – so it requires no batteries or recharging,” Wacom says.

When compared to the Cintiq 16, the new tablet comes with a multi-angle stand in place of the folding legs in the smaller version. The cabling system, however, is not much of an improvement. Another shortcoming is the dim display. For instance, the Pro 24-inch hit at least 235 nits, while the 22-inch has 210 nits, which per CNET is “a little too low.” Moreover, Wacom’s Cintiq 22 is bigger than other similar budget tablets from brands like Ugee and Huion, but it does match their resolution and output.

There is not much difference between the Cintiq and the Cintiq Pro line. The entry-level Cintiq line, however, is for students and “budding professionals” to use before moving on to the Pro models. On the other hand, the Pro line is aimed at animation studios and enterprise use.

Also, with the Pro version, you get a much better display, which uses a 4K Adobe RGB gamut display, more accurate colors, and better optical bonding. In comparison, the Cintiq 22 features an HD (1,920×1,080) sRGB model, and it also lacks a touch option.

The Wacom Cintiq 22 is now available and costs $1,199. In comparison, the 24-inch Cintiq 24 Pro comes with a starting price of $2,000. The Cintiq 22 is now available on Amazon, B&H, CDW and Wacom’s site.

Wacom’s Cintiq 22 can serve as a second screen for your computer helping you to interact with the desktop version of the software via Wacom’s well-refined stylus technology. This is what makes it a better choice for aspiring artists.

Separately, talking of another tablet, a new leak related to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S6 confirms a few features for the upcoming tablet. As per the renders leaked via Android Headlines, the Galaxy Tab S6 could come with a rear-mounted, magnetic stylus.

The magnetic S Pen shown in the leaked renders seemingly snaps onto the tablet just below the new dual camera setup. This rear-mounted S pen is speculated to charge wirelessly and feature Bluetooth functionality as well. Such a design or a rear-mounted S Pen could seem awkward as a user might have to detach it each time to lay the tablet flat.

Additionally, the leaked renders reveal its alleged keyboard cover, which includes a kickstand, something similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro. Other features revealed by the leaked renders include dual cameras (13MP main and 5MP wide-angle units), quad speakers and the lack of a headphone jack.

Further, the Galaxy Tab S6 looks similar to the Tab S5e with slight changes, such as a dual camera setup on the back in the upper-left corner compared to a single camera on the S5e in the center. Earlier leaks and reports suggested that the tablet would feature a 10.5-inch screen, in-display fingerprint reader and Snapdragon 855 processor. Also the tablet is expected to come in three colors – Blue, Grey, and Pink.

Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy Tab S6 around the same time as the Galaxy Note 10. If Android Headlines is correct, the upcoming tablet will launch at the same event as the Galaxy Note 10, on August 7.
