Updating Your iPhone, iPad For iOS 11.1.2 Jailbreak: Here’s How

Updated on

With an iOS 11.1.2 jailbreak on the horizon after a recent exploit discovery by Ian Beer of Google Project Zero, it’s high time for those on older versions of the iOS program to update to this new operating system for a more up-to-date and fully featured version of the operating system.

Opposition From Apple

Recently, Apple starting signing iOS 11.1.2, which isn’t exactly surprising based on the fact that 11.2.1 is now the most recent public release. Apple has kept up to date with the current goings-on in the jailbreaking community, and the recent information regarding the impending release of an iOS 11.1.2 jailbreak has pushed them into action. What this basically means is that it’s next to impossible to go back from a phone running the current operating system to an older version.

However, it is possible to go forward specifically to iOS 11.1.2 rather than accidentally upgrading to the modern release. It’s an extremely complicated process, but Twitter user @iloveapple1999 has listed step by step instructions to get the job done. These steps should be followed with the caveat that it’s not necessarily an accessible process for the average joe. If you’re a power user already running a jailbreak and are looking to take advantage of recent developments in the iOS 11.1.2 jailbreak community, however, it’s difficult but definitely possible.

The fastest way to get this process done would be to locate the correct iOS 11.1.2 IPSW file, plug the device into your computer, and do a manual restore. The problem with that is that Apple is only currently signing iOS 11.2 and 11.2.1, which will cause the authentication process to fail and either leave you stuck on your old iOS 1.3.x or — far worse — force you to update to 11.2.x.

Upgrading For the iOS 11.1.2 Jailbreak

By following the steps from @iloveapple1999, you should be able to migrate pretty much any iOS device over to the update scheduled to get an iOS 11.1.2 jailbreak in the near future.

The process is very lengthy, involves several different downloads, as well as access to tools like Xcode. Apple certainly didn’t make it easy to circumvent their updating system, but it may be worth the effort to get your older jailbroken devices updated to the correct operating system.

Saurik, the developer of the Cydia iOS launcher, has recently announced that he’s very close to a public release of the iOS 11.1.2 jailbreak. With a firm confirmation, it’s now safe to start making the jump. Make sure you read over the process before you begin, as once you start it may be difficult to go back.

For further details on the process, as well as for links to download the programs you’ll need, you can take a look at the project’s GitHub page.
