Apple Inc. iPhone 6 Available Unlocked And SIM Free

Updated on

Apple now offers unlocked SIM-free iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets. Since the phone’s launch in the United States, customers have been able to purchase unlocked versions which would ship with a T-Mobile SIM card.

Apple offers SIM-free versions of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Starting today, Apple now offers a SIM-free version for $649, the same price of the entry level version of the iPhone 6. The unlocked version of the iPhone 6 is also identified as A1586, and the unlocked iPhone 6 Plus is identified as A1524. Both versions are compatible with phone carriers throughout the world, so customers who want to use the phone in the United States can use AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile.

The unlocked SIM-free phones are quite different from the unlocked T-Mobile models. These versions provide a less confusing option for customers who are hoping to buy an unlocked handset to use with GSM carriers outside the country and would otherwise be thrown off by T-Mobile’s SIM. This upgrade should give customers the opportunity to use a local carrier when traveling abroad and subsequently save money otherwise spent on international roaming fees. It would also prevent early termination fees often associated with contracts.

Apple’s objective

Rajeev Chand, Rutberg & Company’s research lead and managing director, explained, “The Apple objective is to give maximum amount of choice to consumers and it allows Apple to free itself from operators. It could be that Apple still sells iPhones in partnership with operators and wants to keep that relationship healthy.”

Recent Apple rumors indicate the company may soon introduce a smaller iPhone 6. These rumors initially started in December, but a more recent report from Feng.com cites sources who say Apple won’t release such a phone. According to supply chain sources, the iOS maker has not submitted any production tasks for a smaller phone, at least right now. Those who want a smaller iPhone can purchase the older iPhone 5.
