If you are like me then you probably didn’t excel at math in your grade school days. In fact, “not excelling” at math is probably putting it lightly. I was bad at math. I once did a whole multiplication test thinking that the “x” meant “+” but the printer had some kind of issue. With that said, I have always been able to add single digit numbers pretty well. I know 1 + 2 + 3 = 6… So why does 1 + 2 + 3 in iOS 11 equal 24?
Basic Math Cannot Overcome Animations
What is going on with the iOS 11 calculator? A calculator isn’t much good if your little cousin does a better job of adding numbers in their head. It turns out the animations in iOS 11 is the root cause of this calculator bug. What happens is that some numbers and symbols are missed or confused when you enter a quick calculation. Since 1, 2, and 3 are so close, it’s easy to tap the numbers quickly before the animations have had a chance to catch up. The result is that 1 + 2 + 3 in iOS 11 is definitely not 6. The bug can be recreated with other strings of numbers but 1, 2, and 3 are the easiest numbers to use to force this bug since they are so close to each other and the “equal” sign.
What’s The Workaround For A Working Calculator?
Until Apple releases a bug fix for the iOS 11 calculator, how can users workaround the issue of 1 + 2 + 3 in iOS 11 as well as other potentially incorrect calculations. Well, first of all, try to use your head for 1 + 2 + 3. However, if you are running some numbers in your iOS 11 calculator, you will want to take your time. After tapping each number or symbol, give the system animations a second to catch up. If you tap the numbers as fast as you can then you run the risk of getting this bug and ending up with the wrong answer. It’s a cool party trick but not very handy if you actually need to calculate something.
Another option is to download a third party calculator app from the app store until Apple releases a fix. There are plenty to choose from and, if you’re like most people simply doing basic math problems, pretty much any calculator should do the trick.
Bug Has Been Around For Awhile in iOS 11 Calculator
One of the more concerning parts of this bug is that it was noticed back in the early days of the iOS 11 beta according to Reddit users and nothing has been done to fix it as of yet. I’m obviously not a developer but it would seem to me that Apple would have to change or disable animations in the calculator app in order to fix the issue. Yes, probably easier said than done but it blows my mind the iOS 11 calculator can get simple addition problems wrong and go through several updates without a fix.
