Cisneros offers town hall-style debates and presents longtime Rep. Cuellar’s first competitive primary challenge in 13 years

LAREDO, TX – Today, a spokesperson for Congressman Henry Cuellar’s campaign rejected calls from challenger Jessica Cisneros to four town hall-style debates in the race in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, saying “it’s not a no so much as it’s not even a consideration.”

In response, Cisneros issued the following statement:

“It’s been a week since we challenged Congressman Cuellar to a series of four debates across our district,” said Cisneros. “Since then, he’s been playing catch up, spending his corporate PAC donations on television ads and preparing to run a campaign for the first time in over a decade. It’s clear the Congressman is worried. But voters deserve to have their concerns heard and the opportunity to hear directly from us about where we stand on issues that affect their daily lives. So why not meet me on the debate stage?”

On December 9, Cisneros challenged Rep. Cuellar to join her at the following four public, televised town hall-style debates based on issues of top concern to voters in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, including but not limited to:

  1. Laredo: on issues related to the border and immigration
  2. San Antonio: on issues of health care access
  3. The Rio Grande Valley: on issues of education and the environment
  4. Spanish language debate: on issues related to jobs and the economy

“Since we launched our campaign in June, I’ve held town halls and participated in public forums with members of our community,” continued Cisneros. “Meanwhile, my opponent has held this office since 2005, yet he hasn’t hosted an in-person town hall in years. It’s time to let voters know where he stands. Listening to our community is my priority; Congressman Cuellar, I’m happy to work around your schedule.”
