2019 is almost over, and travel enthusiasts are planning the trips they are going to take in 2020. Most of the American travelers head to the UK, France, Canada, or Mexico for their vacations. But if you want to visit exciting locations without spending buckets of money, you’d want to go to one of the best value travel destinations. Some of these destinations might not be cheap, but you’ll get the best value for your money.

Reputed travel guide Lonely Planet has published its list of the top 10 best value travel destinations for 2020. It is part of their Best in Travel 2020 rankings, which also include cities, countries, and regions. Lonely Planet took into account the environmental impact of international travel while compiling the rankings to ensure that travelers will have a positive impact wherever they go.

The best value travel destinations are not ranked on low costs alone. According to Evan Godt of Lonely Planet, travelers’ money will go farther in these places than other spots. Some of these places have become more affordable compared to previous years. Here are the ten best value travel destinations:

10- Zanzibar, Tanzania

The Zanzibar Archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean is a heaven for beach lovers. Lonely Planet says you’ll get to enjoy the “magical sunsets” and taste the affordable food at the evening market or one of its multicultural cafes. Tourists also love strolling the ancient alleyways. Beach-side accommodation is incredibly cheap on the island’s west and north coasts.

9- Athens, Greece

Athens is not the cheapest place for tourists, but it’s worth your money. This Greek city has a rich history going back thousands of years. Lonely Planet points out that most of the best things in Athens are “free.” The Acropolis Museum charges a small fee, but you can view the Parthenon from one of many vantage points “for nothing.” Enjoying the beauty of Acropolis at night is “one of the most magical experiences in Europe.”

8- Cape Winelands, South Africa

Cape Winelands in the Boland region of South Africa is a major tourist destination. Located just north of Cape Town, Cape Winelands will greet you not only with beautiful scenery but also with fabulous restaurants and wineries. Most of the wine-tasting tours are inexpensive. South Africa’s favorable currency exchange rate makes it all even more affordable.

7- Tunisia

Tunisia is located in North Africa along the Mediterranean Sea. It is particularly popular among European vacationers. It offers much better value for money than Morocco. The country has a number of beautiful beaches. If you want to get away from the beaches, head over to the Medina of Tunis, the suburb of Sidi Bou Said, and the remain of the ancient Carthage. You can also explore the Saharan dunes.

6- Serbia

Serbia is one of the most underrated travel destinations in the world. Its capital Belgrade is one of the finest European cities with a rich history and a happening nightlife. This city is where the Vinča culture, one of the largest prehistoric European culture, evolved. Belgrade was ruled by the Romans, Slavs, the Ottoman Empire, and the Habsburg monarchy. The city’s architecture and culture reflects its chaotic past. According to historians, Belgrade was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground at least 44 times. If you are a history buff, this is where you’d want to go next.

5- Azerbaijan

This former Soviet republic is one of the countries surrounding the Caspian Sea. Lonely Planet describes Azerbaijan as a “near-unique” destination with a low visiting cost. Despite being highly affordable, Azerbaijan offers world-class accommodation, delicacies, and experiences. The capital city of Baku has several museums and an “ambitious architecture.”

4- Buffalo, New York

Surprised to find Buffalo among the world’s best value travel destinations? Don’t be. This city near the Niagara Falls is witnessing a bit of a renaissance. Even though it’s a value destination, Buffalo offers world-class travel experiences. The Children’s Museum is just one of the many attractions. Visitors can explore the Graycliff Estate, Martin House Complex, EXPO Market, and the Resurgence Brewing Company.

3- Madhya Pradesh, India

Located in the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh has rich wildlife and several ancient temples worth visiting. According to Lonely Planet, the cost of wildlife-spotting excursions in Madhya Pradesh is much lower than similar excursions in Africa. The Pench National Park and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve are home to tigers, wild boar, langur monkeys, and deer. The ancient temples of Khajuraho are a must-visit if you are in Madhya Pradesh.

2- Budapest, Hungary

Budapest has been named the second best value travel destination in the world. Budapest is one of the “most rewarding” grand dames of Central Europe. Some of the places worth visiting are the Buda Castle, the Gellert Thermal Bath, the Chain Bridge, and the Budapest opera house. Strolling the city, you’ll be clicking hundreds of Insta-worthy pictures.

1- East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Whenever vacationers plan a trip to Indonesia, the primary destination on their minds is Bali. But if you happen to go beyond Bali, the East Nusa Tenggara islands will welcome you to some of the quietest and most amazing beaches. The Alor Archipelago has one of the country’s “best diving scenes,” says Lonely Planet. Komodo Island will have even fewer people because of the intentionally high-priced membership program to protect the Komodo dragon population.
