Tesla Cybertruck specs, price and preorder details

Nov. 26, 2019 Update: Elon Musk says they have received an impressive 200,000 preorders for the Tesla Cybertruck already. On Saturday, he tweeted that they had already received 146,000 preorders, with 42% of buyers choosing the dual-motor model, 41% choosing the tri-motor model, and 17% selecting the single-motor model. Unfortunately, the preorders for the vehicle don’t make it clear just how many will be converted to actual orders. The $100 deposit is not only cheaper than deposits for previous Tesla vehicles, but it’s also fully refundable.

Tesla cybertruck vs Ford

The Tesla Cybertruck has gotten plenty of media attention, and not only for its unusual design. The truck has also become the focus of some new memes that are circulating online.

Tesla Cybertruck vs Ford F-150

Musk shared a video of a Tesla Cybertruck towing a Ford F-150 uphill. The same video was shared during Thursday’s presentation and billed as a tug-o-war between the two vehicles.

Ford VP Sunny Madra responded to Musk’s video by asking him to send them a Cybertruck so they can do an “apples to apples test.”

Musk responded with, “Bring it on.”

It’s unclear which of the three Cybertruck models was used to tow the Ford F-150 uphill. It’s also unclear which F-150 model was used. What is clear is that the Cybertruck that was used for the video looks bigger than the F-150, so it seems like one of the smaller F-150 models was used for the tug-o-war.

Electrek states that electric motors can typically produce more torque faster than internal combustion engines, which could be one reason Tesla’s Cybertruck appears to have beaten the F-150 in a tug-o-war. For a true apples-to-apples comparison, the two companies would have to pit the Cybertruck against the all-electric F-150, which is in development right now.

Previously: Tesla revealed its much-anticipated electric pickup truck last week, and it wasn’t what anyone expected. It doesn’t even look anything like a pickup truck, but it does look very futuristic, which is probably what CEO Elon Musk intended. We’ve gathered all the Tesla Cybertruck specs, pricing and preorder details in one easy guide for you.

Tesla Cybertruck specs

To emphasize its position within the pickup market, Tesla compared the Cybertruck to the Ford F-150, which many would say should be the standard for pickup trucks. The two trucks share similar dimensions, with the Cybertruck measuring 231.7 inches in length, 79.8 inches in width and 75 inches in height. The bed measures 78 inches in length.

The 2020 Ford F-150 measures between 209 and 251 inches in length, between 80 and 86 inches in width and between 75 and 79 inches in height, depending on the specific model. The bed of the Ford F-150 measures between 66 and 96 inches.

The truck will feature a standard adjustable air suspension, which will reportedly provide 16 inches of ground clearance, an approach angle of 35 degrees and a departure angle of 28 degrees.

Tesla Cybertruck motor specs

As far as the other Tesla Cybertruck specs go, the company is planning three different models. The base model will be a single-motor truck with rear-wheel drive and a 250-mile range on a single charge. It will have a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds and be able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in only 6.5 seconds.

The mid-range model will be a dual-motor truck with all-wheel drive and a 300-mile range. It will have a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and be able to accelerate from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds. The high-end model will be a tri-motor truck with a 500-mile range and towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. The truck will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 in only 2.9 seconds. All three Cybertruck models will be able to handle payloads of up to 3,500 pounds.

Other details about the Cybertruck

The Tesla Cybertruck specs don’t tell the whole story about the vehicle. The internet quickly filled up with comments about the look of the vehicle. The design features sharp angles and a back end that’s hidden by some sort of cover, which is one of the big reasons it doesn’t even look like a pickup truck. The cover or whatever it’s called protects the cargo in what Tesla calls the “vault” of the truck rather than the bed, which is what most trucks have. Between the vault, frunk and sail panel, the automaker claims the Cybertruck has a total of 100 cubic feet of secure storage space on the exterior. The vehicle also has storage under the vault.

The design isn’t the only thing that’s unusual about this truck. It features an Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless steel exterior similar to Tesla armor glass. The metal withstood direct hits from a sledgehammer, and supposedly it’s bulletproof. The glass is also designed to be very heavy duty. During the presentation last week, Tesla management dropped a steel ball onto sheets of the glass, and they didn’t break. However, when the same ball was thrown at the windows on the vehicle, they broke, although the ball didn’t go all the way through. Clearly, some work still must be done on the glass.

The truck seats six people. The funky design may or may not be the one Tesla goes with when the vehicle finally enters production. Musk said they might redesign the body, depending on what the public thinks about it.

Price and preorders

The base Cybertruck model will start at $39,900, while the mid-range model will sell for $10,000 more at $49,900. The triple-motor Cybertruck will be priced at $69,900. Buyers can also upgrade to the full self-driving capability, locking in the price at $7,000, even if it goes up between now and when the truck is ready for delivery.

Tesla currently plans to begin producing the single-motor model in late 2021. The dual-motor and tri-motor models are expected to enter production in late 2022.

Preorders for the Cybertruck are already open. You can preorder here by putting $100 down. The payment is refundable if you decide to cancel your order later.
