Capcom just confirmed reports that the legendary Resident Evil 2 is going to make a comeback, this time in the form of a remake. The game maker broke the news in a video in which game producer Yoshiaki Hirabyashi explained how fans urged the company to remake the game, however, the game company had not been able to make the game a reality until recently.
Resident Evil 2 remake still in the development stage
Hirabyashi reported that the game is still in the early development stage, and it will be a while before they share an update on the product. There are no details about the upcoming game right now, but we can expect it to be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, probably sometime in 2017.
Capcom has enjoyed many successful game remakes in the past. The game maker even noted that game re-releases are a key business activity for the company and reported that overseas sales for Resident Evil HD Remastered were much higher than expected. The company added that growth of the download sales channel enables gamers to have more options.
The successes of the Resident Evil franchise
Resident Evil 2 initially launched in 1998 for the original PlayStation, and later it was released for other game consoles, including the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, GameCube, and PC. The game plot had protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield running from the fictional Raccoon City, a town overrun by zombies. The first game’s producers, Shinji Mikami and Hideki Kamiya, have not been confirmed to be working on the Resident Evil 2 remake.
The Resident Evil franchise sold a total of 61 million units throughout the world. It also spawned a variety of products, including novels, comic books, action figures, and card games. It even inspired a series of loosely-based popular action flicks starring Milla Jovovich, Eric Maibus, and Michelle Rodriguez.
