Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY) To Launch New Phone For The Holidays

Updated on

Not only will Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) refuse to die, but rather it seems keen to continue releasing phones to add to its burgeoning lineup whenever someone deems the company dead. The Z10 has enjoyed some success in Europe and Latin America with a touchscreen that hardcore Blackberry users detest. No QWERTY keyboard, no sale seems to be the prevalent tone of those loyal to the company.

Consequently, the company plans to release a typing master phone with its new operating system early next week. Pre-orders for the hybrid phone that includes both touch function with a QWERTY keyboard will begin tomorrow, before the phone they are calling the Q10 hits the shelves on Monday. With a price tag of $199 and a full keyboard, the company is betting that it can retain customers lost during the release of the Z10.

Research In Motion To Launch New Blackberry

Just when Blackberry seems to be correcting its past failings, and holding on to existing customers, Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB), in a report from CNET, has announced its intentions to add a new phone to its lineup before holiday shopping begins in earnest following Thanksgiving. The offering will once again ditch the keyboard, alienating a few, and go full-touch. Essentially, Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has determined that its client base will not only ditch the keyboard but will also embrace the operating system the company hopes to challenge both Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) with. No small task or ask.

The phone will be known as the A10 and is meant to supplant the Z10 as Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s high-end phone.

The A10 already has one U.S. carrier backing it. Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S), the same Sprint that may or may not be acquired before it begins to sell the A10. Sprint Nextel  chose not to offer the Z10 perhaps with the full knowledge of the A10’s arrival.

The Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) A10 is the device that CEO Thorsten Heins hinted at in an earlier interview with CNET.

“There’s one new product I’m excited about, but I can’t really share it,” Heins told CNET in March.

While Sprint’s unwillingness to carry the Z10 left some Blackberry users in a bit of a tizzy, Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) felt that it was worth the wait.

BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer Kristian Tear, in an interview with CNET, refused to comment specifically when asked about the A10 but had no trouble speaking in vague notes about the company’s future.

“Innovation is a really, really important cornerstone for Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB),” he said.

It’s quite possible that the A10 will turn out to be the “make or break” product for Blackberry / Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) but people have been saying and writing that for years.
