Private Equity: Natural Resources Fundraising by Preqin
Private equity natural resources funds have raised an aggregate $28bn through the first seven months of 2015. As such, full-year fundraising is set to be the highest on record, surpassing the current high of $30bn raised in 2013.
Fundraising growth has been driven by the notable drop in commodity prices, particularly oil, over the past year, creating potential for undervalued companies and assets in this market.
Other notable trends in natural resources fundraising include:
- Six of the 10 largest natural resources funds ever raised have reached a final close in the last three years, including the $6.5bn EnCap Energy Capital Fund X, which closed in 2015.
- Since 2006, 86% of the capital raised by natural resources funds has been focused on North America.
- A number of managers have brought natural resources funds to market over the past year; there are now a record 64 funds in market, compared to 54 as of July 2014.
