Plug Power exploring new opportunities

So far, 2014 had been an eventful one for Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG). At the end of February, the company announced a new contract with Wal-Mart for the supply of 1,738 GenDrive fuel cell units along with providing infrastructure and fueling services to six of Wal-Mart’s distribution centers. Wal-Mart has been a client of Plug Power since 2007, but the recent contract is a big one. This was the biggest single order ever received by the company from a single client. Also, during the fourth quarter conference call, CEO Andy Marsh stated that the company had received its first order from a big automobile manufacturer, which further lifted investor’s sentiment on the prospects of company’s fuel cell systems, although this statement was later clarified.

Presently, Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) is making efforts to find new markets for its fuel cell systems. The company has identified two such markets: airport support vehicles and refrigerated delivery trucks. The New York-based company expects to become profitable in the fourth quarter, this year.

Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG)’s fuel cell systems are a good replacement for lead-acid batteries. Fuel cells can run for 24 hours a day with short breaks to refuel while batteries require much more time to recharge. Also, fuel cells are much more environmently friendly as they don’t emit carbon, and chemical reactions are low.
