The OnePlus 6 is almost here. The Chinese vendor traditionally launches new flagship models in June, but the OnePlus 6 is rumored to be unveiled in late April or early May. Just weeks before the official unveiling, the company has revealed OnePlus 6 specs. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said in a forum post titled Our Pursuit of Burdenless Speed that the upcoming flagship would have “the best hardware.”
Pete Lau said the OnePlus 6 would feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset, up to 8GB RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. The OnePlus CEO had told media at the CES earlier this year that the next-gen flagship would run the Snapdragon 845 because there was “no other choice.” The OnePlus 6 specs mentioned by Lau are probably for the most expensive version. The rumor mill claims there will also be a 6GB RAM variant, and that the device would be available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of storage options.

OnePlus smartphones are known for offering premium specs at affordable price tags. But the company has been increasing the price of its flagship devices every year. The 256GB storage option for OnePlus 6 suggests that it would cost more than the OnePlus 5T, which offered maximum internal storage of only 128GB. Recent leaks claim the 64GB OnePlus 6 would cost CNY 3,299 ($523) while the 128GB would set you back by CNY 3,799 ($602) and the 256GB version would cost CNY 4,399 ($698). Its price would still be lower than rival devices that offer outdated specs. For instance, the Google Pixel 2 XL with 64GB internal storage, Snapdragon 835 chipset, and 4GB RAM costs $849.
Pete Lau added that there is more to user experience than just speed. There are tons of smartphones out there with high-end hardware specs that suffer from poor software optimization. OnePluas has a dedicated Team FSE (Fast, Stable, Efficient) that focuses on improving the performance of OnePlus smartphones. Other rumored OnePlus 6 specs include a 6.3-inch Full HD display and 4K video support.
Past leaks have shown that the device would feature a dual camera system similar to last year’s models. It is said to have a 20MP and a 16MP camera on the back, and a 20MP snapper on the front. The OnePlus 6 would retain the 3.5mm audio jack. The rumor mill claims it could ditch the metal design in favor of a glass back to facilitate wireless charging.
According to The Verge, the OnePlus 6 would have a display notch similar to the iPhone X. Dozens of Android vendors have adopted the top cutout since the iPhone X launch. Google is also adding native support for the notch with Android P to optimize the software for the cutout. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei told The Verge that the notch on the OnePlus 6 would be aimed at offering more screen real estate by “moving the entire notification bar up.”
Meanwhile, a video posted on OnePlus India’s official Facebook page suggests that the Chinese company has joined hands with Marvel Studios to launch an Avengers-themed version of OnePlus 6. The video has since been taken down, but not before it was spotted by media outlets. The teaser intercuts between the Avengers and OnePlus logos, revealing the Avengers: Infinity War release date at the end. The Avengers OnePlus 6 specs would be similar to the standard version.

The Infinity War will hit theaters on April 27th. So, it’s possible that the phone would be unveiled around the same time. It is unclear whether the Avengers-themed version will be limited to select markets or it would see a worldwide release. In the past, OnePlus has launched the Star Wars edition of OnePlus 5T, which had received a positive response from consumers. If OnePlus launches the upcoming flagship around the Infinity War release, it would mean that the company will not stick to its half-yearly upgrade cycle.
OnePlus focuses on one smartphone at a time, and the company doesn’t make consumers wait for a full year for a new phone. It aims to stay on the cutting-edge, but the same approach could also hurt its sales. For instance, if buyers know that OnePlus 6 is coming out in a month or two, most of them will likely wait for the new device rather than buying the current OnePlus 5T flagship. Pete Lau did not mention the OnePlus 6 launch date, but we can expect the device to hit the store shelves later this month or early next month. OnePlus 6 would run Android Oreo-based OxygenOS.
